MacPro Late 2013 & Windows 10 - EFI problem

#4

It sounds like something is preventing the EFI partition from being mounted. Do you have any antivirus or security software installed that can be disabled to test?

tim

#5

Yes, I have Norton IS installes and running (no log of any interference). EFI can be mounted manually as I wrote

#6

My issue is the same as this topic with the EFI:
I’m trying to migrate winclone6 image of bootcamp win10 internal SSD partition from old 2013 macbook pro with osx 10.12 onto a new 2018 osx 10.14 macbook pro osx 10.14 usb-c external usb-c samsung SSD T5 1TB partitioned same size as restore image using winclone7. Winclone6 does not work on osx 10.14. So can I expect this to work? Is there special stuff I need to to do to prep for the recovery image to work on the external usb SSD? Is there anywhere the complete end-end instructions to make this work?

2013 MBP OSX 10.12 Source from internal SSD winclone6 image to 2018 MBP osx 10.14 External usb-c SSD using winclone7 to recover.
Should the external usb SSD not be partitioned and just dedicated for bootcamp ntfs?
Would it help to build a new bootable windows bootcamp on the external SSD, then recover the image?
Winclone support what do recommend for best route for success?

Thank You
Keith

#7

It’s a new MBP and no antivirus.

#8

If you run this in Terminal:

diskutil list

does it should that the EFI partition is the first partition on the disk?

#9

/dev/disk6 (external, physical):
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *500.1 GB disk6
1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk6s1
2: Microsoft Basic Data 500GB-USB-W 499.8 GB disk6s2

usb-c external samsung T5 500GB. Whole ssd is dedicated for the winclone image.

#10

Please try mounting the EFI partition by running this command in Terminal:

sudo diskutil mount disk6s1

See if there is an error and if an EFI volume mounts on the desktop.

Hi! I’m getting confused here… I’ve been stuck with a problem for weeks now but your answer, Tim, seems in response to fischertech00 and not the original topic. Not what I would expect.

Should I start a new topic with my original question, hoping to keep it focussed? Getting desperate here!

EFI is on disk0s1, can be mounted using sudo diskutil mount disk0s1 and can be written to.

An additional piece of the puzzle: attempting to create a new image of the Windows10 volume fails without any error message and leaves Windows in a hibernated state (according to Winclone)/

Thanks for any kind of suggestion! And, please, make it clear if you’re responding to the original topic or not…

#12

Sorry about the confusion. Is it possible to disable Norton when restoring the image?

tim

#13

I won’t have access to my Mac for a few days, but I’ll give it a try.

All I can say for now is that, in the past, Norton was always running and never caused a problem.

Additional point: last time I ran Winclone, I looked at the log and noticed a line to the effect that the MBR was not updated as SIP was active. I did not have time to examine the log in greater detail for other messages, but could it be SIP? Remember that problems started occurring around the time I updated to Mojave.

Thanks, Hans

#14

It could be related to SIP. Try disabling and see if it resolves the issue. If it does, let me know and I can look into why Winclone isn’t detecting the issue.

Sorry for the delay, but I’ve been busy trying to identify a pattern to my issues. Even after two days of work, no luck…

In relation to your earlier question, App Control in Norton Security is OFF and the log shows no activity towards Winclone (App Control or Internet access).

When I started the currents attempts, the Boot Camp partition turned out to be not mounted, and could not be mounted as Windows was supposed to be in hibernation (I certainly shut down Windows last time I used it). Rebooting into Windows solved that problem.

I then successfully created an image of the internal Boot Camp partition on an external USB3.0 HDD (Log available).

Next, I cloned the same partition onto an external TB2 SSD. C,loning produced no error messages, an EFI partition was created but in Bootmanager showed as EFI and was not bootable. In addition, a SIP error was shown in the log:

Identical results were obtained trying to clone to a USB3 SSD, or trying to restore an image to this external disk.

I disabled SIP, but got the same problem.

As I was messing with two external disks (USB3 and TB2 SSD’s), I noticed that ALL Windows/NTSC partition get unmounted while cloning; is this normal?

Strange enough, failed attempts leave sometimes leave all Windows partitions unmounted but not always. I have not detected a pattern.

Finally, two attempts to clone the internal Boot Camp partition did not throw an error (USB3 and TB2), but left the EFI on the external SSD’s empty and thus not bootable:

After every attempt, EFI was mountable and could be written to.

All log files of these, and many other runs, are available.

I am close to giving up, also because of the lack of apparent involvement of the “community”. Someone must haven an idea (or an encouraging word)…

Just one more time, and tell me what you need please.

Thanks, Hans

I have the same issue with Winclone6/7 and finally had to give up. I built my external usb-c 500GB T5 SSD win10 bootcamp from scratch. Had to manually transfer my win & app licenses to the new bootcamp. Boot manager still shows EFI but it does boot great to win10 and all works. I think all would have worked fine if the migration was from internal to internal but in my case it was internal to external Usb ssd.I have forum post describe my circumstance of my migration config. It was a youtube instructions that shows the details to setup win10 on external ssd.

Thanks

Keith, thanks! I’ll look into it and give it a try! Strange that WinClone works for many but not for some…

#18

Any further suggestions? Tim?

I just realized I had this article on the problem:

#20

I have exactly the same problem
If someone can help us …
Thanks

#21

Ananke, thanks for chiming in! I hope we can figure this out.

Tim, thanks for the link to your article; as I mentioned earlier, my antivirus app (Norton) is not active against internal activity and shows no logs against WinClone. Also, it was running at the time WinClone was not posing any problems. Even now, EFI partitions can be mounted manually and are writable.

Although I do not have immediate access to my Mac and cannot check, I carefully went through my earlier posting of WinClone logs and noted a few items I don’t understand. Please remember that, at most times I had several external drives connected with unsuccessful WinClone clones. Also remember my earlier comment that ALL clones (bootable or not) were dismounted during restoration…

My observations and questions on the earlier logs:

  • 2019-04-16 14:58:52.567007+0200 localhost com.twocanoes.WincloneHelper[646]: Executing “ntfsclone -f -O /dev/disk6s2 /dev/disk0s3”

Which is the source, and which is the destination here? If I remember correctly, /dev/disk0s3 was the source. Correct?

Nevertheless, the source is identified as:

  • 2019-04-16 15:12:29.485568+0200 localhost com.twocanoes.WincloneHelper[646]: [com.twocanoes.winclone:WincloneHelper] source device is file:///dev/disk6s2

The next log is:

  • 2019-04-16 15:12:29.603681+0200 localhost com.twocanoes.WincloneHelper[646]: Copying /Volumes/MacPro_Win 1/Windows/Boot/EFI/bg-BG to /Volumes/EFI/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bg-BG

Here I do not understand /Volumes/MacPro_Win 1 (certainly not the original source or destination) and /Volumes/EFI/EFI/Microsoft (EFI/EFI ?)

For another attempt the previously posted logs show:

  • 2019-04-17 21:03:48.875092+0200 localhost com.twocanoes.WincloneHelper[5055]: [com.twocanoes.winclone:WincloneHelper] source device is file:///dev/disk3s2

  • 2019-04-17 21:03:48.993647+0200 localhost com.twocanoes.WincloneHelper[5055]: Copying /Volumes/MacPro_Win 1/Windows/Boot/EFI/bg-BG to /private/var/tmp/MPSHQG2K/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bg-BG

Looks very different and, again, /Volumes/MacPro_Win 1 cannot correspond to the source.

For future debugging it would be great if the disk/partition would be mentioned in logs like:

  • 2019-04-16 18:18:36.744131+0200 localhost com.twocanoes.WincloneHelper[693]: [com.twocanoes.winclone:WincloneHelper] Error mounting EFI on disk .<.p.r.i.v.a.t.e.>. (sorry this word, without the dots, disappears when text is pasted into this forum - I’ll update this post accordingly)

Could it be that, when multiple volumes with EFI and Windows partitions are present (bootable or not), the ID pointers get mixed up? Does WinClone check whether sourcefiles exist and copies actually get written? If not, this would the empty EFI partitions I mentioned earlier…

Again, thanks for your help

#22

The /Volumes/MacPro_Win 1 usually means there are 2 volumes mounted with the same name, or the mount point didn’t get removed. You can see the exact mount point for the Boot Camp drive by running “mount” in Terminal. That will show what devices are mounted where.

It might also be an issue if the EFI partition is not on the first slice. Can you post the output of the command “diskutil list” in Terminal?

Indeed, I had multiple Windows partitions with the same name (produced by Winclone), but only the internal could be booted at any time. This part of the problem solved for now.
The first copy command in building a new EFI is sometimes shown as:
Copying /Volumes/MacPro_Win 1/Windows/Boot/EFI/bg-BG to /Volumes/EFI 1/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bg-BG
and sometimes as:
Copying /Volumes/MacPro_Win 1/Windows/Boot/EFI/bg-BG to /private/var/tmp/MPSHQG2K/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bg-BG
Is this normal? I do not have my notes here, so I cannot tell the exact circumstances.
I’ll try to run cleaner tests.

Thanks
