MacPro Late 2013 & Windows 10 - EFI problem

Sorry for asking the community but I’ve been turning around in circles and cannot seem to solve my issue…
I’ve been using WinClone for years without a problem, but recently ran into two issues that may well be related: 1. cloning the Bootcamp/Windows 10 partition into an image (external HDD) results in the Windows OS disappearing from the startup manager (Alt), and 2. restoring the WinClone image to the Bootcamp partition fails with EFI mounting error.
I’ve been playing around a lot, and the following appear to produce consistent and reproducible errors and events:
Cloning Bootcamp to an image makes Windows disappear from the startup options (Alt)
EFI can be mounted (sudo diskutil mount disk0s1) but, apart from APPLE has no other contents
Restoring an image (after a restart) fails with the EFI error
Mounting EFI (sudo diskutil mount disk0s1) works fine; again only the APPLE folder
Restoring the image with EFI mounted, proceeds without errors; EFI now contains the additional Boot and Microsoft folders
After a restart, both the MacOS and Windows appear as startup options

Mac Pro Late 2013; Windows 10; WinClone 7; Norton IS (no sign of any interference); Paragon NTFS (disabling makes no difference to the above) - all fully updated

Although the above work-around works, these issues are new and it is a pain having to restore Windows after each backup.
These problems have appeared around the time of an update to Mojave and the latest version of WinClone (no certainty though)

Any suggestions are welcome!

It sounds like something is preventing the EFI partition from being mounted. Do you have any antivirus or security software installed that can be disabled to test?

Yes, I have Norton IS installes and running (no log of any interference). EFI can be mounted manually as I wrote

My issue is the same as this topic with the EFI:
I’m trying to migrate winclone6 image of bootcamp win10 internal SSD partition from old 2013 macbook pro with osx 10.12 onto a new 2018 osx 10.14 macbook pro osx 10.14 usb-c external usb-c samsung SSD T5 1TB partitioned same size as restore image using winclone7. Winclone6 does not work on osx 10.14. So can I expect this to work? Is there special stuff I need to to do to prep for the recovery image to work on the external usb SSD? Is there anywhere the complete end-end instructions to make this work?

2013 MBP OSX 10.12 Source from internal SSD winclone6 image to 2018 MBP osx 10.14 External usb-c SSD using winclone7 to recover.
Should the external usb SSD not be partitioned and just dedicated for bootcamp ntfs?
Would it help to build a new bootable windows bootcamp on the external SSD, then recover the image?
Winclone support what do recommend for best route for success?

It’s a new MBP and no antivirus.

If you run this in Terminal:

diskutil list

does it should that the EFI partition is the first partition on the disk?

usb-c external samsung T5 500GB. Whole ssd is dedicated for the winclone image.

Please try mounting the EFI partition by running this command in Terminal:

sudo diskutil mount disk6s1

See if there is an error and if an EFI volume mounts on the desktop.

EFI is on disk0s1, can be mounted using sudo diskutil mount disk0s1 and can be written to.

An additional piece of the puzzle: attempting to create a new image of the Windows10 volume fails without any error message and leaves Windows in a hibernated state (according to Winclone)/

I won’t have access to my Mac for a few days, but I’ll give it a try.

All I can say for now is that, in the past, Norton was always running and never caused a problem.

Additional point: last time I ran Winclone, I looked at the log and noticed a line to the effect that the MBR was not updated as SIP was active. I did not have time to examine the log in greater detail for other messages, but could it be SIP? Remember that problems started occurring around the time I updated to Mojave.

It could be related to SIP. Try disabling and see if it resolves the issue. If it does, let me know and I can look into why Winclone isn’t detecting the issue.

Sorry for the delay, but I’ve been busy trying to identify a pattern to my issues. Even after two days of work, no luck…

In relation to your earlier question, App Control in Norton Security is OFF and the log shows no activity towards Winclone (App Control or Internet access).

When I started the currents attempts, the Boot Camp partition turned out to be not mounted, and could not be mounted as Windows was supposed to be in hibernation (I certainly shut down Windows last time I used it). Rebooting into Windows solved that problem.

I then successfully created an image of the internal Boot Camp partition on an external USB3.0 HDD (Log available).

Next, I cloned the same partition onto an external TB2 SSD. C,loning produced no error messages, an EFI partition was created but in Bootmanager showed as EFI and was not bootable. In addition, a SIP error was shown in the log:

I disabled FastBoot in Windows, recloned to the external TB2 SSD. This throws an EFI cannot be mounted error, and the EFI partition was empty (I cannot guarantee that the EFI partition was left over from the previous attempt). The cloned Windows partition was not resized:

Identical results were obtained trying to clone to a USB3 SSD, or trying to restore an image to this external disk.

I disabled SIP, but got the same problem.

As I was messing with two external disks (USB3 and TB2 SSD’s), I noticed that ALL Windows/NTSC partition get unmounted while cloning; is this normal?

Strange enough, failed attempts leave sometimes leave all Windows partitions unmounted but not always. I have not detected a pattern.

Finally, two attempts to clone the internal Boot Camp partition did not throw an error (USB3 and TB2), but left the EFI on the external SSD’s empty and thus not bootable:

After every attempt, EFI was mountable and could be written to.

All log files of these, and many other runs, are available.

I am close to giving up, also because of the lack of apparent involvement of the “community”. Someone must haven an idea (or an encouraging word)…

I have the same issue with Winclone6/7 and finally had to give up. I built my external usb-c 500GB T5 SSD win10 bootcamp from scratch. Had to manually transfer my win & app licenses to the new bootcamp. Boot manager still shows EFI but it does boot great to win10 and all works. I think all would have worked fine if the migration was from internal to internal but in my case it was internal to external Usb ssd.I have forum post describe my circumstance of my migration config. It was a youtube instructions that shows the details to setup win10 on external ssd.
