Cloning bootcamp HDD to SSD

OsX: 10.12.6
Winclone: 7.3.4 (Standard)
Source: 1Tb HDD
Destination: 480Gb SSD

Clone Volume-2-Volume failed (disk size, even though it should fit - followed another support article and created image, then restore.)

During restore:

Trying block-mode instead, but it failed - most likely due to chkdsk required. Deleted the previously mentioned files that "file exist"ed. Chkdsk and trying a block-mode image and restore next.

Alas, block-mode is no good, as the SSD is smaller than the source HDD. I’ll try file-mode again after deleting the files and chkdsk.

Ok so - I cleaned up some more space (SteamApps for example)

  • chkdsk and deleted the directory with bad file (from log)
  • Took another File-Mode backup from HDD, took about 16hrs
  • Restored to SSD, took about 10hrs

Pleasingly, the SSD boots Windows just fine. It shows “Windows” in the Startup Manager (holding opt/alt
while booting) as expected.

Because I now know that backing up Windows from within OS X works, I changed the backup disk from being split into 2 (half osx, and half Windows) to just one partition for OsX and made sure timemachine includes the winclone backup.

All in all, it took a whole week, but I am pleased with the results of using Winclone.

Next I want to explore using Winclone with ZFS!

I no longer have a problem, and this “issue” can be closed.

Thanks for letting me know. Have a great day.
