Startosinstall failed with return code255

Hi:
I just purchased the MDS Automaton and downloaded MDS.

Tried experiment on MacMini with High Sierra installed.

After Booting into recovery and into the process, it pops this error:

startosinstall failed with return code255
Please verify that the recovery partition is not older than the macOS you are trying to install, and verify the certificate used to sign the install package is not expired.

I have verified that the recovery partition is set for High Sierra
I downloaded the installer from the MDS app.

What should I try next?

when it gives that error, it should have the command in the terminal that was run. Try running that command manually in a new Terminal window in recovery and see if it gives a better error message.

More problems to report….

I tried to re-initialize the Automaton

Now it just hangs at boot after the recovery partition is loaded. It does not issue the /Volumes/mds/run command

When I do it manually….

Startosinstall error 13.

Throws errors like crazy when trying to install Mojave

What version is the macOS recovery partition? Try running:

sw_vers

in Recovery and verify it is 10.10 or later.

tim

It is 10.13.6 from command-r boot.

When I hold down the option key at Boot, no recovery partition shows.

This is a new SSD drive that was formatted from Disk Utility launched from Recovery.

Also, how do I completely reset the Automaton to factory settings? It does not appear to be running the scripts correctly.

Can you post the contents of the log when it was showing all the errors?

tim

I have attached the log from the last failure.

The error looks like it is saying it doesn’t have a network connection.

tim

Strange. The machine is connected to the network with Ethernet.
