Stuck formatting as NTFS

I am trying to migrate a Win 7 Boot Camp partition from one iMac to another.
After having problems with just about every step, I have finally got one iMac into TDM, connected to the target via thunderbolt. I turned off SIP, and selected the remote volume as the source, and also selected the FAT formatted local volume as the target.
Winclone appears to be stuck at 2% changing the local volume format from FAT to NTFS, logs-

Winclone GUI says ‘Analysing Source’

This is the second time it’s got to this stage and stuck. I’d love some help as this 2-3 hour job has turned into a 36 hour nightmare…

interestingly the target machine has a Samsung 850 SSD same as this guy-

Unfortunately an intermediate disk image was the first method I had tried and it did not work

ok I was mistaken, the copy was progressing. I thought it had stopped, but allowed it to run overnight. It was at 2% at 7:29pm and the next log entry was 10% at 1:16am.

Unfortunately it still didn’t work- I got a message that the copy had failed an integrity check at 4:47am and 97.30% complete.

I guess this implicates the source, so I’ll work on that.

For some reason this worked on a 4th attempt, with no change to the Windows partition. I was unable to go onsite yesterday morning so I tried again because it was still set up and I had remote access.

Honestly I have no idea how difficult this operation is, but I do think the experience could be improved for users.

  1. one failure to restore was because my target was slightly smaller than the source- just got a generic error- a more specific error message would have helped a lot.
  2. The 6 page migration doc is well written, but I prefer more explanation of what is going on. Agree that this might be just me.
  3. Error messages all over the place for bad format types were just icing on the cake. If there was more info I would have been able to avoid some of these issues and saved a lot of time.

Without knowing more about what is going on inside the product I’d say the experience was more akin to a v1 product, not v6. But I’m glad it exists.
