Unexpected folders inside System folder

After imaging a MacBook Pro using MDS (Catalina 10.15.7), I discovered some unusual folders inside the System folder. In particular, I found an Applications folder which contains all of the base install macOS apps. This was in addition to the normal Applications folder at the root of Macintosh HD, as expected. I also found theses folders in side the System folder:

  • DriverKit
  • iOSSupport
  • Volumes

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a bug?

These are all now normal and expected system folders on Catalina and newer.

These have to do with the new split system volume with the read only system volume and Catalyst app support.
