2015 MacBook Pro SSD Upgrade - Runing BootCamp and Windows 10 - IT WORKS - See Last Post!

Hi

I own the following MacBook Pro:

A1502 – Early 2015 – 13” Retina Display
Thunderbolt 2 Port (1000 Gb/Sec)
USB 3 port (500 Gb/Sec)
512 GB SSD

Boot Camp Version 6

Windows 10, Version 1803, OS Build 17134.885

Mac OS Sierra Version 10.12.3 Sierra (Later Edit … Minimum of 10.13.6 High Sierra required for NVMe drives … Now upgraded)

All is running well but I am out of space on my SSD and want to replace it with a Adata SX8200 PRO (ASX8200PNP-ITT-C) 1Tb SSD. This is a NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4 device… I plan to use a Sintech ST-NGFF2013-C adapter to adapt the M.2 SSD for use in the MacBook.

I have a licenced copy of both Winclone 4 and 5

My questions are:

• Is Winclone 4 or 5 sufficient for my task? Is there any is real benefit (in this case) of upgrading to version 7 other than a new interface?

• How do I proceed? What is the process for “cloning” the working SSD that I currently have on to the new larger SSD?

• Is it possible to copy everything in one go or must I build the apple side up first, then install Boot Camp and then reinstall the Windows partition? I am certain that something will change and cause problems.

• Can somebody give this Winclone novice a plan of action before I proceed?

• Is there a better choice of software in your opinion?

Thanks in advance

James

Can anyone Help?

Bump

After some reading on this site I can now see that Winclone 4 requires Mac OS 10.9 to 10.11 so that wont work. Winclone 5 requires 10.9 to 10.12 - I assume all versions of 10.12?

I note that Winclone 7 requires Mac OS 10.12+.

So Winclone 5 may work …… But my questions about how to proceed continue.

If you ask why do I have two licenced copies of Winclone …. Some time ago (years) I tried an upgrade on another machine …. at the time all did not go well and I was advised to try Winclone 5 ………… I don’t think it made a lot of difference and I ended up rebuilding the machines hard drive! This is why this time I am asking for the correct procedure BEFORE I start - Help.

Found this web page which may help https://9to5mac.com/2017/01/31/macos-backup-restore-boot-camp-windows-partition-winclone-video/

Is there no twocanoes tech help who can give heads up on how to proceed?

Is Winclone 4 or 5 sufficient for my task? Is there any is real benefit (in this case) of upgrading to version 7 other than a new interface?
Winclone 7 is compatible with 10.12, 10.13, and 10.14. Compatibility with the OS and hardware is the real advantage. Improved UI is nice too, but not the main reason for updating.

How do I proceed? What is the process for “cloning” the working SSD that I currently have on to the new larger SSD?

We have outlined the instructions here:

(migrating to a new Mac is the same as a new hard drive).

Is it possible to copy everything in one go or must I build the apple side up first, then install Boot Camp and then reinstall the Windows partition? I am certain that something will change and cause problems.
See the instructions. You don’t have to reinstall Windows. Winclone will restore the image.

Can somebody give this Winclone novice a plan of action before I proceed?
That is the idea behind http://twocanoes.com/getting-started-winclone/. We also added that link to a help button in Winclone 7 so another good reason to update!

Is there a better choice of software in your opinion?
I’ll leave that to others since I am biased

tim

Tim Thanks for that.

All is not going well … Status/Error 46 ! … From reading the forum this seems to be about read write access?

I have checked the drives settings and I am listed there for read & write.

http://twocanoes.com/knowledge-base/sending-log-files-to-support/ seems to be out of date for sending log files to you using ver 7.3.4 (from Memory) … is there a new page on how to do this?

Under Winclone preferences I did find use block based imaging (not WIM) and that produced a 636 Byte Winclone Document … That doesn’t look correct … my Boot Camp drive is 450+ GB so something must be wrong!?

If the external drive is being used as a time machine backup destination … can a Winclone image share the same partition? Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled).
I have as you can see purchased Winclone 7 and I have also upgraded the MacOS to 10.13.6.
This all seems very cryptic … can you Kindly shine some light on how to get this image made … It seems to be taking days trying to work out how to make this software function.

Oh Tim I found your video about the blue screen following restoring an image https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byvjqU_1bDg&list=PLFtGGT240LANVsTJBPStU_A6VapqII6fa&index=5&t=0s

If you recall the problem is the lack of a driver … Is it not possible to install the correct driver for the new SSD BEFORE making the Winclone image so that the drivers are there following the restore?

I appreciate you making the video … but I have to tell you that it really is too fast for normal users … who want to replace their SSD’s with a larger SSD. They probably bought WinClone for that sole task and may never use it again … step by step instruction on paper please or a much slower video that we can follow by pausing it.

If this is possible … Where do I find the required driver for my new Adata SX8200 Pro (ASX8200PNP-ITT-C) SSD and Sintech ST-NGFF2013-C adapter?

If I try to Run Winclone in WIN mode … I now get to 6.9% and it hangs there. Console filtered for Winclone says: “LSExceptions shared instance invalidated for timeout”.

Does anyone know what that means?

When I gave up and stoped the frozen process at 6.9%, console was still running and produced:

Is there any tech help for this software … ? Anyone have a number or email for them?

Found a very helpful video on YouTube … great background

Another video which may save the day if I can’t get a winclone image

Evidently it is possible to clone a Mac disk without any additional software

This is a very useful video if your Chkdsk freezes.

But I am confused … I ran Chkdsk and it found no errors, great … BUT if I run Chkdsk /b it freezes at 28% and then reboots to windows after sitting for a long time? Has it finished or failed?

HALLELUJAH I have a Winclone image … I haven’t tried to use it yet but the program finished and said all is well.

My drive partition is 425Gb and Winclone made a 315Gb image file. It takes a LONG time. At first I thought it had stalled but just like CHKDSK it takes many hours so be patient.

Why did it work this time … I can’t honestly tell you, but I have a feeling that following the procedure about how to properly run CHKDSK in the video above was a real step forward.

I wanted to see if the incremental backup system would work and I used my new image as a base image for the incremental setup. Considering that almost nothing had changed since I created the new image I thought that it would quickly scan, realise that nothing had changed and possibly make a small new file. Wrong … again winclone took just as much time as it took making the first image and ultimately after about three hours I gave up and cancelled the incremental backup.

I am just grateful to have an image and really don’t have much faith in winclone yet so I decided not to push my luck.

Regarding winclone and which version to use for this particular upgrade … with MacOS 10.13.6 High Sierra came with new NVMe Driver’s (and boot rom) that are required to run my new SSD. Winclone 6 (correction 5) says that it requires MacOS up to 10.12. So I guess that means only winclone 7 will run on 10.13.6?

From http://twocanoes.com/go-retro/

  • Winclone 7 requires macOS 10.12+.
  • Winclone 6 requires macOS 10.11+.
  • Winclone 5 requires 10.9 to 10.12.
  • Winclone 4 requires 10.9 to 10.11.
  • Winclone 3 macOS 10.6.8 to 10.10.

Thanks Tim

Sorry I said 6 when I should have said 5.

Previously I asked: I have licensed WinClone versions 4 & 5, is there any reason to upgrade Winclone for this particular upgrade … the answer is yes, you will need to use WinOS 10.13+ for the NVMe system drivers … that means that you must use winclone 6 or 7.
