Hi,

Unable to run Winclone here as I cannot mount the bootcamp drive.

Would LOVE help. Please.

So it seems that mounting the bootcamp volume was a problem with windows hibernating rather easy to fix, so a shutdown with “fastboot” disabled allowed the drive to be viewable and mountable by macOS.

However now, when I again try to make a backup Winclone seems to have trouble actually saving the data to the hard drive, and it stops immediately and claims the backup was complete.

Here is the log data.

still cannot get Winclone to successfully image my bootcamp drive.
I checked another thread Winclone 7 Image Backup Never Work!

And tried the suggestions there. It still fails and gives me the error in the screenshot below.
Yes the drive is APFS formatted that I am writing the image to.

I think all the issue stem from the partitioning:

0: GUID_partition_scheme *500.3 GB disk0
1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
2: Apple_APFS Container disk1 426.0 GB disk0s2
3: Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP 73.6 GB disk0s3
4: Windows Recovery 471.9 MB disk0s4

This is how the disk is partitioned if you use the Windows installer. Boot Camp Assistant creates a single Boot Camp partition. The issue with the Windows installer doing it is that it splits the boot files to a separate partition. When restoring a Winclone image, it attempts to recreate the boot files on the single Boot Camp partition. Looks like it is failing in your case.

tim

Thanks for the advice. However bootcamp assistant was used to originally install windows 10 on this MBP years ago.

What can I do to extract and image/backup this Windows install and then migrate it over to a new hard drive?

I have a large amount of unique software on this Windows installation and would certainly hate to lose it.

Installing a new bootcamp on the new hard drive gets me to install windows, but I cannot copy the windows partition back over and have it work. Something in the MacOS is preventing me from doing this very simple task.

I’ve already tried to restore windows 10 onto the new disk using the disk image software included with Windows 10, however it seems very keen on wiping the whole drive and taking out Mac OS at the same time.

Trying to allow it to do so, and install Mac OS via recovery afterwards ends up with the reverse situation of MacOS trying to wipe the whole disk for itself, instead of just letting things “share” happily.

I went ahead and purchased Winclone expecting it to do the job since thats what it seems to be designed to do… yet now I still cannot back up my bootcamp installation, and use that backup to restore onto a new hard disk.

Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Any help here would be beneficial.

This entry :

Is it possible you reformatted / changed the disk partitions after booting into to the Windows installer?

tim

Tim,

No, I did not intentionally change any of the partitions after booting into the windows installer.

All I know is that on the the windows side its been working for years.

Is it possible that catalina has done something? I recently upgraded to catalina and it seems to have changed the mac side of the partitions.

There are no other ways I am aware that I could have intentionally done anything here to cause it.

All I know is the following.

Mac OS works fine, no complaints.

Windows OS works fine, no complaints.

Boot up, holding the option key works fine…. no troubles there.

Open up console and filter on “ntfs”. then try clicking “mount” in disk utility on the BOOTCAMP volume and see if any messages are printed in Console.
