Struggling with Driver Injection

Migrating an old BootCamp installation from a 2010 MacBook Pro on High Sierra to a 2020 iMac running Catalina.

The BootCamp image was created with Winclone 6 (not sure precisely which version).

Used Win Clone 8.2 to restore the image to the iMac’s BootCamp partition. Found the KB article about injecting the SSD Driver, plus the following threads:

Downloaded the linked beta (v9.0 build 48137), and used it to inject the drivers.
Log showed success (as far as I can tell).

However, BootCamp partition doesn’t boot. Just blue screens with “INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE”
Tried re-injecting only the SSD driver. Same result.
Modified the iMac’s Startup Security to “none” and allowing external boot devices. Same result.
Got the option in Windows during one boot attempt to “ignore driver signatures”. No luck there either.

Any thoughts on how I can accomplish this migration?

After you inject the drivers, do a Command-L to show the log and then post the last bits that are driver injection related.

The way that drive injection works is that it mounts the volume read/write, the updates the registry files. However, that is giving errors:

openHive(): read error

do you have a 3rd party NTFS driver that might be causing an issue? You could also try injecting using the MS tools:

Thanks for the help and the suggestions, however, nothing worked. Some interesting details I discovered:

When working in the Win10 installer command window, initially, I could see the drive, but a “dir :d” command couldn’t list the files. It threw the error “The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all the required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted.”
Running “chkdsk” on the restored-from-winclone bootcamp volume (:D) then told me “The type of file system is NTFS. The specified object was not found. The first NTFS boot sector is unreadable or corrupt. Reading second NTFS boot sector instead.” chkdsk then processed the volume, found problems and told me to run again with the “/scan” flag.
Running with the “/scan” flag failed with the error "A snapshot error occurred while scanning this drive. Run an offline scan and fix.
Doing yet another chkdsk with the “/offlinescanandfix” flag told me it had repaired the drive. Yay! I thought that this might have been the root of the problem, and since I was working on the volume that I had used the Winclone9beta driver injection too, tried to boot without manually re-injecting the drivers.
#fail. Blue screen with “A required device isn’t connected or can’t be accessed.”
Going back into the Win10 installer command window to inject the drivers then couldn’t even see the D: drive (bootcamp volume) with an error akin to “The device isn’t ready.”

Starting from scratch, I used Winclone9beta to restore my original image to the problem volume. I did NOT use Winclone to inject Apple’s drivers. I ended up going through everything that I described above, with the additional step of successfully injecting the drivers. However, starting up the Bootcamp partition gave me the same blue screen as above.

So…I gave up. Used the Win10 installer to format that partition and install Win10 from scratch, then used Apple’s installer to install the required Bootcamp drivers. I’ll restore my data from backup and reinstall my applications.

I don’t know what happened–I’m sure that jumping from a 2010 MacBook Pro to a 2020 iMac was a large part of the issue, but the results of the various chkdsk runs and the inability to even access the volume is worrisome and has (slightly) eroded my trust in using Winclone as a backup/imaging solution.

If you have further thoughts, that’d be great. I know this long post won’t really help anyone else, but if somebody starts having the same issues I did, at least they’ll know they aren’t alone!

I got my 2020 iMac and identified the driver issue. It should now inject the SSD driver correctly. Download build 48143 or later from https://bitbucket.org/twocanoes/winclone-beta/downloads/
